Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke follows the story of prince Ashitaka and Princess Mononoke and their entanglement with the fight for the forest sprits and the humans who destroy it. There are many examples of Kami in this film such as the forest god, the Kodama, and the boars.

Yokai

Yokai are folkloric Japanese spirits, monsters, and demons that, like Kami, can be either mischievous or malevolent.

The Forest god

The forest god is a key aspect of this film. He is the most important Kami because he represents the forest as a whole. The forest god is embodied in two different ways, the daidarabotchi and the shishigami. The daidarabotchi is the legend of a gigantic Yōkai that creates nature with his movement such as water when he walks and is viewed as a mountain spirit. This displays the earliest ideas of Shinto about how mountains were gods and hat they could control the life and death of their surroundings. This is the embodiment of the forest god during the night. The daidarabotchi transforms into a shishigami during the day. In the daytime, the god encompasses a deer with a traditional Japanese mask over its face. This Kami links nature to the spirits because it is represents both god and the spirits.

The Kodama

The Kodama are Hiyao Miyazaki's rendition of the forest spirit from Japanese folklore. These smalls creatures inhabit trees and represent the trees and the spirits within them. In ancient times, if anyone would cut down a tree people would pray to the Kodama who were housed in the trees to avoid misfortune.
